I think that Dawson is about the best American fighter today. I think he beats Calzaghe and Hopkins easily. Although with Calzaghe nothing surprises me. Dawson has the best skills and all around game of anybody in his weight class. Paul Williams is also another very good American fighter but with everyone avoiding him he probably won't get a great chance to prove it. He has a good chin and pretty good all around skills. Other than that if PBF fights again he is the best period with his skill set whether you like him or not but he is "retired" as of now. The British have the group of the most popular fighters right now I think. Maybe not the best, but the popular ones. Haye hasn't impressed me at all even though I missed his Barrett fight. Arreola hasn't impressed me either for that matter. Nonetheless Calzaghe is good and Hatton is good at 140. I like Witter too even though he lost.

I'm happy to see Mayweather come back to fight Cotto, Margarito or Williams but do you really think he would? If he comes back to fight Hatton or De La Hoya thats not so interesting and the conclusion would be predictable.

I also agree the best boxers need to get in the ring with each other and although unbeaten records are good and keep fighters confident and too an extent marketable I think too much is made of staying unbeaten. Pavlik got punished by Hopkins but he'll come back strong and he took on a big challenge and you have to respect that, likewise for Cotto, got beat by Margarito but still I cant wait to see him get back in the ring.

I think Paul Williams has a shot at greatnes and maybe Berto if he looks good against someone who hits back. Part of boxing's problem in America and everywhere else in fact is that it has a credibility issue with so many paper champions and alphabet boys all avoiding fighting each other.Who in the general public could name 3 "world champs" we need one genuine champion at each weight.I hate to say it but that is why UFC is picking up fans , the best fighters have to fight each other.Popularity of boxing will wane until it gets its act together, the champs must fight the best challengers period!! UK boxing fan

Unfortunately boxing has lost a good deal of its appeal to young Americans. The popularity and huge money of basketball and American football have lured most of the best American athletes away from the sport.

I'm sure that another great fighter will emerge from the States but I think they will be fewer and further between as time goes on.

As much as I'd like to see more Americans take to the sport, I personally don't care what country boxers come from. So whether they are from my home country (USA) or Calzaghe or the Klitschkos or Arthur Abraham or Manny Pacquiao, I just want to see talented fighters and compelling matchups.

Good article but no mention of Paul Williams? Even Tony Margarito is running scared of a rematch with The Punisher.

Very good article.

As a fan of British boxing its great to see the HYaes, Hattons and Calzaghesdoing so well, and soon Froch will be there too.

As a British fan of boxing I crave these American greats as it was the Haglers and Hearns and Tysons that made me fall in love with the sport in the 1st place.

I struggle to believe that boxing in America is on a slippery slope to averageness, theres still plenty of fine Anerican boxers around, I do believe there is just a lull in the rising of pure world class boxers. Anytime a new 1 could appear.

And totally agree about the Mayweather comment, I saw that article and as fantastic as Mayweather is we dont need these boxers coming out of retirement we should be putting some limelight on emerging talent. ITS GOTTA BE THERE.

I was asking myself this when an earlier post was saying boxing needs Floyd Mayweather back again.
Boxing needs new blood in the game.
Although I have enjoyed the UK clean sweep over the last month (which i'm not implying makes us some sort of boxing superpower its just quite novel for us brits) it is in boxings best interests that America does produce new talent because it brings the money into the sport.
Who is going to be fighting the headline fights in Las Vegas in 3-4 years time?
