In perhaps the most impressive performance of all in the gold medal tournament, Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko overwhelmed his French opponent Khedafi Djelkhir with power shots, hurting him often and causing three standing eight counts in the 1st round. After the third standing eight count, the fight was stopped giving Lomachenko the gold medal.

Results: Lomachenko wins by 1st round stoppage

LIGHTWEIGHT Alexey Tishchenko vs. Daouda Sow

Alexey Tishchenko, the former 2004 Olympic Gold medal winner as a featherweight, came back four years older at 24, but still fighting at the top of his game. He build up an early lead on Daouda Sow from France, winning the 1st round by a 3-2 score. In the second, Tishchenko build on the lead hitting Sow with left hands to end the round ahead by a 7-4 score. In the third round, however, Sow began to mount a comeback, hitting Tishchenko often with left hands to tighten the score at 10-8. In the 4th round, Tishchenko, now tired, held onto his lead to win narrowly by a 11-9 score to win the Olympic gold.

Result: Tishchenko wins 11-9

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT -Manus Boonjumnong vs. Felix Diaz

Former 2004 Gold Medalist from Thailand Manus Boonjumnong was expected to win this bout. However, after building a small 2-1 lead over his opponent Felix Diaz from the Dominican Republic in the 1st round, Diaz came storming back in the 3rd to take the lead by a 10-3 score. Diaz proved to be the much better fighter of the two on the inside and was able to score frequently with quick flurries, lighting the long-armed Boonjumnong up with punches. Now hopelessly behind, Boonjumnong, a weak puncher, was unable to make a comeback and ended up losing by a 12-4 score. To look at him fight, he looked excellent, showing superb movement and outstanding boxing skills. Yet, he was unable to handle Diaz on the inside and because of the shortness of the fight and the rules of the scoring, he ended up on the short end, losing by a 12-4 score.

Results Diaz wins by a 12-4 score.

WELTERWEIGHT – Carlos Banteaux Suarez vs. Bakhyt Sarsekbayev

In a fight that was never close from the beginning, Bakhyt Sarsekbayev from Kazakhstan, totally dominated his Cuban opponent, Carlos Banteaux Suarez, beating him by a 18-9 final score to win the gold medal. The powerful southpaw Sarsekbayev turned up the gas after a slow feeling out round in the 1st, and built up a 7-2 lead in the second with hard left hands to the head of Suarez. In the third round, Sarsekbayev added seven more points to finish the round with a 14-7 lead. Suarez did well early in the round, scoring with right hands. However, he was still unable to match the power or speed of Sarsekbayev who increased his lead by winning the round 7-5. In the 4th round, Sarsekbayev added four more points late in the round as he let his hands so frequently, scoring often against the desperate Suarez.

Results: Sarsekbayev wins 18-9
