Sahin Decisions Bermas

sahin573535.jpgBy Dave Lahr: Undefeated female flyweight prospect Asieye Ozlem Sahin (6-0, 3 KOs) kept her unbeaten record intact with a four-round unanimous decision over Ukrainian Nataliya Bermas (0-2) on Saturday night at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle, in Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, on Saturday night. Sahin, 31, won every round of the right and had a relatively easy time pounding out the decision over the much slower Bermas.

Sahin was giving up a few inches up height to Bermas, who used her long reach to land labs in the early going of the fight. However, Sahin quickly closed the distance and began landing hard right and left hands to the head of Bermas. For her part, Bermas was unable to fully take advantage of her height advantage due to her poor hand speed and power, which enabled Sahin to move in on her without worrying about getting hit with fast shots. Once inside the long reach of Bermas, Sahin landed some nice shots to the head of Bermas, before moving once again to the safety of the outside. In between rounds, Sahin elected to stand, something that is becoming more and more common in boxing.

In the second round, Sahin immediately wasted no time in tearing into Bermas with hard combinations to the head, For the first half minute of the round, Sahin lit her up with fast 1-2 combinations on the inside, where Bermas was unable to get her own punches off due to her long arms not being able to get any leverage on her shots. Bermas, however, quickly got her distancing and began landing slow jabs just as she did in the first round, yet the jabs seemed to have little effect on Sahin, who took them and walked straight through them to get to Bermas with power shots again and again in the round. Sahin also used some nifty movement to keep out of the way of many of Bermas long jabs. Bermas was pretty much limited exclusively to throwing jabs in the round.

Sahin immediately started attacking with fast combinations in the 3rd round. The differences between Sahin’s hand speed and Bermas was dramatic to say the least. Though I wouldn’t exactly call Sahin as having fast hands, she looked like a blur in comparison’s to the snail-like speed of Bermas’s shots. Clearly, this is something that Bermas needs to work on if she wants to get better because she is painfully slow with her punches and it’s going to continue to be a problem for her in the future. After the initial flurries to start the round, Sahin was seemingly content to pick Bermas off with single right hand shots to the head, mixing in an occasional left hand as well. Bermas seemed confused at this point, not knowing what to do with her.

Bermas attempted to let her hands go in the fourth round, hitting Sahin with a couple of weak right hands. However, Sahin just ignored the shots and began landing some really choice right hands and left hooks to the head of Bermas. She then circled around Bermas and landed several left hooks to end the round.
