Machimana Flattens Sanders In 1st Round KO

By Eric Schmidt: Showing how badly he’s slipped in the past five years since his 2nd round TKO of then World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, Corrie Sanders (42-4, 31 KOs), now 42, was stopped in the 1st round last night by South African heavyweight champion Osborne Machimane (15-3-1, 11 KOs). Sanders landed well early on in the round, hitting Machimana with several powerful straight left hands. However, near the end of the round, Sanders, who came into the bout weighing a heavy 239 lbs, was nailed by a right hand and dropped.

The referee Jaap Van Niewenhuizen then moved in and halted the fight at 2:41 of the 1st round. The bout likely ends to the career of the former WBO champion Sanders, who was coming off of nine months of inactivity to take this fight. In the long view of history, I’m sure Sanders had wished that he’d have taken a little softer opponent than Machimana, the South African heavyweight champion. Not that that Machimana all that good, because he certainly isn’t, with losses to Shane Cameron, Livin Castillo and Albert Sosnowski in 2006, none of which are world class fighters.

Sander’s loss, however, suggests that he is well past his prime, and should consider another occupation rather than boxing. It’ll be interesting to see whether Sanders decides to continue on or hang up the gloves. He reportedly is in need of money, hence his comeback in 2006 after being retired for two years. If he does indeed decide to continue on, Sanders needs to consider working his way up slowly, like George Foreman did in his comeback. However, at 42, time is something that Sanders would appear to have little of.
