John Stops Caballero, Hopes For Shot At Pacquiao

By John Dower: Undefeated World Boxing Association featherweight champion Chris John (41-0-1, 22 KOs) easily dispatched his overmatched opponent challenger Roinet Caballero (22-7-1, 16 KOs) when his corner was forced to throw in the towel in the 7th round on Saturday night in Jakarta, Jakarta Raya, Indonesia. John, 28, who has yet to taste defeat, used a sharp jab and fast combinations to methodically destroy Caballero, hitting him at will with shots through much of the fight. In round six, it became especially one-sided, with John tagging Caballero with tremendous shots, knocking him around the ring. The fight was stopped at 3:00 of the 7th round by referee Raul Caiz Jr.

For his next bout, John is interested in taking on super featherweight Manny Pacquiao, who just happens to be going up against Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter that John easily defeated by a 12-round unanimous decision on March 4th, 2006. John is hoping that Pacquiao can get by Marquez, so that he may get a shot at the Filipino star in the near future. Certainly, John has the speed, not to mention the defense to give Pacquiao big problems should they ever meet in the ring.

The problem, however, is getting Pacquiao interested in the fight, as Pacquiao has been selective about his opponents in recent years, focusing on older fighters like Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera rather than taking on the young lions like John. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. John has youth on his side, meaning that Pacquiao can’t simply wait him out and wait until John is old and past his prime to fight him.

    1. John did NOT easily win against Marquez. It was a close fight. The scores were ridiculous. It could go both ways.

    2. John is the one hiding. He is fighting easy fights against nobodies. Caballero is top50 at best. Takemoto was even worse. Acosta? Don’t make me laugh. Rojas was just too old. If Chris John had any ambition, he would fight credible opponents instead of bums.
