Darchinyan vs. Gorres On Saturday
Former International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (29-1, 23 KOs) takes on #6 rated IBF super flyweight Z. Gorres (27-2, 15 KOs) on Saturday night at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, in PHCebu City, Philippines. Darchinyan, 32, ranked # 5 in the IBF super flyweight division, is making his second fight since losing his IBF flyweight title in a shocking 5th round TKO to Nonito Donaire last year on July 7th.
Rather than stay at flyweight, and risk fate a second time by trying for a rematch with Donaire, Darchinyan has opted to move up in weight three lbs to the super flyweight division, where the current champion, Dimitri Kirillov, is decidedly less fearsome than Donaire. It would seem to be a smart move by Darchinyan, as he was completely dominated by the faster, taller and more powerful Donaire. I’d see Darchinyan losing by another early Ko if he were to take the risk and seek revenge against Donaire.
In selecting Z.Gorre, 25, Darchinyan has an opponent more to his liking. He has none of the power that Donaire had, making him less a threat to test Darchinyan’s still shaky chin. More than that, Z.Gorre’s stamina is also an issue, as he faded in the 2nd half of his split decision loss to Fernando Montiel last year in February.
