Williams Angered Over Cintron’s Choice Of Margarito & Cotto for Future Opponents

In the latest boxing news, undefeated World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) is reportedly furious at International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kermit Cintron due to him opting to call out Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito rather than taking on a bout with Williams. Previous to this, Williams and Cintron had decided on fighting each other on February 23, following Cintron’s title defense on November 23rd. However, Cintron appeared to have change of heart after winning the fight by 10th round stoppage and discovering that he had once again re-injured his right hand.

Most people weren’t giving Cintron much of a chance against Williams, who is a non-stop punching machine even more productive than Antonio Margarito, a fighter that had his way with Cintron a couple years ago. Now, instead of Williams fighting a big money unification bout with Cintron, he has to settle for taking on Carlos Quintana on February 9th, a bout that will likely not stir up much excitement or fan interest in the weeks leading up to the fight. As such, Williams is reportedly furious at Cintron, feeling that he’s trying to dodge him.

However, Cintron seems to be doing the smarter thing, as a bout with either Margarito or Cotto, if Cintron is able to land a fight, would likely mean a bigger payday than it would with Williams. Despite being arguably the best welterweight in the division, Williams is still mostly unknown to the majority of fans. The ones that do know of Williams, however, aren’t impressed with his slapping style of punching, a style that is sometimes compared to watching a slap fight. Of course, Williams will likely be a popular fighter at some point in his career, but at this time not many people particularly care to see him fight.

For Cintron, it makes sense because by facing Williams, Cintron would be a long shot to win the fight, and worse than that, he wouldn’t be paid well in a losing effort. Based on pure mathematics, Cintron would be better off sticking to fighting his mandatories or, if he’s so inclined, trying to line up a bout with either Margarito or Cotto. Margarito wouldn’t be the wisest choice considering the ease with which he beat Cintron in the past, but perhaps there’s some trick that Cintron is keeping up his sleeve with which he feels that he can beat Margarito next time around.
