Ragosina Defeats Fountain

ragosina4332.jpgWoman’s WIBF/WBA/GBU/WIBA super middleweight champion won a dominating one-sided 10 round unanimous decision victory over challenger Akondaye Fountain (7-1-1, 4 KOs) on Saturday night the Anhalt Arena in Dessau, Germany. In doing so, Ragosina, 31, won the vacant World Boxing Council super middleweight title, which had formerly been held by Laila Ali. Ragosina, formerly from the Soviet Union and now living and fighting in Germany, had little trouble with her 35 year-old opponent, who was giving up 5 1/2 inches in height to Ragosina. In comparison, Ragosina looked almost like a giant compared to Fountain, as the height difference was startling.

For most of the bout, Ragosina used her long reach and excellent ring movement to jab the previously unbeaten Fountain into submission. It wasn’t until the fourth round that Fountain even attempted to put serious pressure on Ragosnia, but even then, Fountain’s reach was far too limited to find the chin of the 5′11 1/2 Ragosina. Each time Fountain would attempt to land anything significant, Ragosina would lean back, preventing Fountain’s punches from landing.

Though, an occasional shot would connect to the chin of Ragosina, it was still far too little to make any significant difference in the bout. In rounds 5-10, Ragosina used a lot of circling movements, shooting out her long jabs and throwing quick left-right combinations. Fountain tried to mount an attack in the 10th round, but it came up short as Ragosina answered back with a flurry of combinations, sending Fountain in retreat. The final judges’ scores were 98-93, 98-92 and 98-92.
