Orr Defeats Gallegos
In perhaps the best match of the night on the undercard of Joshua Clottey-Shamone Alvarez was undefeated former Canadian Olympic middleweight Donnie Orr (11-0, 5 KOs) who had a tough time in defeating the talented Enrique Gallegos (6-3, 1 KOs) on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though Orr appeared to win all of the rounds of the fight, except the 5th, Gallegos made each round close, as he continuously fought back with combinations late in the rounds to make them close. The final judges’ scores were 60-54, 59-55 and 59-55, awarding the decision to Orr.
In the opening minute of the first round, the power-punching Orr, 30, looked like he would have an easy 1st round KO, as he staggered Gallegos with a big left hook and then an equally huge right hand. Orr was thinking only power shots in the early going, completely forgetting about his jab as he gave it his all to take out Gallegos in the 1st. However, Gallegos showed an excellent chin, coming back in the last minute of the round to land some excellent shots. Gallegos was cut in the round over his right eye.
In the 2nd round, Orr continued to throw huge power shots, making Gallego’s nose bleed. Still, though, Gallegos continued firing back with an excellent jab and by the end of the round Orr’s left eye was beginning to swell badly.
In rounds three through five, Gallegos began coming on as Orr appeared to be tiring out, as the fight became much closer. Orr continued to throw an occasional big shot, but in the meantime he getting hit an awful lot, making it difficult to tell which fighter was the better prospect, Gallegos easily won the fifth round, battering Orr with sharp counter punching.
In the sixth round, Orr finished strong in the last minute of the round with a series of huge right hands that hurt Gallegos and had the crowd screaming for more.
