Hawkins Decisions Guinn: Is This The End Of The Line For Dominick?

In somewhat of a shocking upset, journeyman fighter Robert Hawkins (23-10, 7 KOs) defeated former heavyweight contender Dominick Guinn (28-6-1, 19 KO) by 10-round unanimous decision last night at the River Rock Casino, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The bout was never in doubts, as Hawkins, 32, pounded out a one-sided decision, winning by the final judges’ scores of 97-93, 99-91 and 100-90. Hawkins, a fighter mainly known for being a trail horse, controlled most of the fight, using excellent inside work and sharp combinations to pile up the rounds.

Whenever Guinn attempted to get distance so he could put leverage into his shots, Hawkins moved in closer, essentially suffocating Guinn’s power and keeping him at a decided disadvantage. Most fighters would adapt to what Hawkins was doing by using their feet, along with a jab, to keep him on the outside, but Guinn seems unable to cope with Hawkins strategy, allowing the fight to remain on the inside. As the rounds worse down, Guinn threw less and less punches, acting as if his arms were paralyzed.

In comparison to his 2003 form, when he was a top contender in the heavyweight division, Guinn looked completely shot as a fighter. This loss, perhaps, puts the final nail in the coffin of Guinn’s boxing career, as he has now lost six out of his last eleven fights, with one bout resulting in a draw. While he could still fight on as a journeyman type fighter, I’m not sure thats what Guinn had in mind for the rest of his boxing career.

    ZKO:

Guinn needs to either quit boxing (before he gets seriously hurt) or move down to a lower weight division. I am not sure if he is really in to boxing and puts in the time/effort necessary. When you lose to a tune-up, it’s time to give it up. He’s had many chances to resurrect his career… it’s over. Good luck in your other career.
