Garcia - Hernandez Ruled a No Contest
International Boxing Federation welterweight prospect Roberto Garcia’s (24-2, 17 KOs) but with Freddy Hernandez (22-1, 17 KOs) was stopped in the 3rd round on Friday night after both fighters clashed heads, causing a bad cut on the right eye of Hernandez, 28. Referee Lawrence Cole, ruled that the cut was in a particularly bad spot and it would be a danger to Hernandez if the bout were to have continued.
At the time of the stoppage, Garcia, 27, ranked # 3 in the International Boxing Federation welterweight rankings, was ahead in the bout. In the first round, Hernandez controlled the action with his constant movement, pumping out jabs and right hands, and keeping the slower Garcia from catching up to him. In the 2nd round, however, Garcia started cutting off the ring better allowing him to land powerful body and head shots.
Near the end of the round, Garcia landed a tremendous left hook, dropping Hernandez to the canvas. Lucky for Hernandez the knockdown came at the end of the round, because he didn’t look like he could take another shot like that without going down for the count.
In the 3rd round, Garcia continued pursuing Hernandez around the ring, landing powerful shots whenever he would be able to catch with him. However, there were to headbutts in the round, and on the second one, Hernandez was cut badly over the right eyelid. After referee Lawrence Cole examined the cut, he immediately stopped the fight at 0:57 of the 3rd round and ruled it a no contest.
