Angulo Stops Ter-Meliksetian
Junior middleweight prospect Alfredo Angulo (11-0, 8 KOs) destroyed hard-punching Syrian Archak Ter-Meliksetian (16-6, 13 KOs) in the 1st round n on Friday night at the Chumash Casino, in Santa Ynez, California. Angulo, a former 2004 Olympian for the Mexican boxing team, found himself under tremendous fire at the opening bell of the first round as Ter-Meliksetian, whom had previously lost four out of his last five fights going into this bout, was immediately all over Angulo, hitting him with a flurry of hard shots and trying to take him out.
However, while Ter-Meliksetian, 29, was unloading his shots, he left himself wide open for return fire, and subsequently ran into a big left hook from Angulo that stunned Ter-Meliksetian. Angulo, 25, followed up with a flurry of shots, dropping Ter-Meliksetian to the canvas. Referee Lou Moret then gave Ter-Meliksetian a standing eight count, letting him try and clear his head.
Unfortunately for Ter-Meliksetian, as soon as the action was continued, Angulo started in where he left off, landing two left-right combinations and knocking Ter-Meliksetian to the canvas for the second time in the round. Rather than allowing the fight to continue, referee Lou Moret decided he’d seen enough and stopped the fight at 1:19 of the 1st round.
Angulo, a former four-time Mexican national champion, would have to be considered one of the top prospects in the junior middleweight division. Though he doesn’t have much hand speed, his awesome power makes him a threat to anyone one in the division. At this stage, I’d put him and James Kirkland at the top of the class in terms of junior middleweight prospects, both of which I would consider a lot better than the heavily hyped Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
