According to the latest boxing news from AP, International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44 KOs) wants to own all of the heavyweight titles in the near future, not just two of them, which he’ll likely be getting not far from now when he takes on World Boxing Organization title holder Sultan Ibragimov. Klitschko, 31, reportedly wants to own all of the titles, like Lennox Lewis, before him did. Indeed, Wladmir may get his chance, because if he can get by Ibragimov, there’s talk of him immediately taking on World Boxing Association champion Ruslan Chagaev, another Eastern European fighter, who would possibly entertain the idea of fighting Klitschko because of the huge payday that he can make out of the bout.
Even if Chagaev or Ibragimov were to lose, they’ll still make a lot of money out of the fight, much more than they would if they were to fight a string off dangerous, lesser opponents than Wladimir. In terms of risk, it seems like a smart move for either of them, in particular, due the fact that they’ll still be young enough to possibly win back a heavyweight title at a later stage in their career.
As for Samuel Peter, who takes on World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev in early 2008, he’s already gone on record saying that he wants a rematch with Wladimir, who beat him by 12-round unanimous decision in 2005.
