Should There Be An Asterisk Next To Floyd Mayweather’s Name In The Record Books?
Recently while reading about Barry Bonds’ problems with the steroid scandal in the media, and the cries from some fans that he should have an asterisk next to his name in the record books, I wonder if an asterisk should be inserted next to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s name in the record books as well. His fight against Jose Luis Castillo in April 2002, a bout in which Mayweather won a questionable unanimous decision, despite the fact that Castillo appeared to easily win the fight. To this day, many fans, still talk about the bout and rank it as one of the worst decisions they’ve ever seen in boxing.
I have to agree with that, and I don’t know how Mayweather can accept the win as legitimate, if he watched the fight. In the bout, Castillo applied constant pressure from the beginning of the fight, forcing Mayweather up against the ropes and punishing him constantly with hooks and uppercuts. Mayweather, like always, threw his pot shots, but they were no match for Castillo’s constant fire power. As the rounds progressed, Mayweather became a one-armed fighter, as he hurt his right hand and couldn’t use it without grimacing in pain.
Now, with only his left hand, Mayweather was like a wounded animal, getting him with four shots for every one of his own, and taking shocking punishment for the rest of the fight. When the decision was announced afterwards, giving Mayweather a unanimous decision win by the scores 116-111, 115-111 and 115-111, I was furious because there was no way that Mayweather could have won the fight.
