Mike Tyson Receives One Day Jail Sentence
Former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) received a sentence of one day in jail along with three years of probation for possession of cocaine and driving under the influence, according to the latest boxing news. Tyson, 41, had pleaded guilty in September to the cocaine possession, which is a felony, and a DUI, a misdemeanor. Tyson will start serving out his jail time on Tuesday. Tyson, however, got off lucky, as he could have received a sentence of four years in prison, the maximum for these kinds of offenses.
Later, Tyson owned up to his mistakes, saying to the judge “I take responsibility for my mistakes.” Tyson was arrested on December 29, in Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was pulled over by the police, who subsequently found cocaine in the car. The 41 year-old Tyson hasn’t fought since June 2005, when he lost a sixth round TKO to Kevin McBride. Tyson still reportedly owes millions to creditors, and it remains unclear how he’ll pay off the huge debts. He previously fought series of exhibition bouts, traveling around the United States.
At his advanced age, it seems unlikely he’ll make a return to the ring. If he does decide on coming back, it would likely be in some kind of exhibition bouts, as Tyson would have difficulty fighting more than a few hard rounds without tiring out and perhaps getting stopped again. He would, however, still likely sell out an arena due to his immense popularity.
