Marquez Decisions Juarez
World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) won a one-sided unanimous decision over the tough Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KOs) on Saturday night at the Desert Diamond Casino, in Tucson, Arizona. The final judges’ scores were 118-110, 117-111 and 120-108. Both fighters came out swinging in the first round, throwing huge shots and trying to take each other out. However, almost immediately there was a clash of heads and Juarez was cut over the left eye. Marquez used the cut as a target for his hard hooks, tagging Juarez repeatedly in the eye for the remainder of the fight.
Later, Juarez would claim that the cut effected him and prevented him from fighting more effectively. Though, by looking at the two of them fight, a blind man could see that Juarez simply wasn’t in the same league as Marquez, as he was thoroughly dominated in every round of the fight, only rarely getting the better of Marquez. For his part, Juarez was very active, however, his punches were far less accurate than Marquez. With this win, Marquez keeps alive his chances for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, with whom Marquez fought to a draw in 2004. Since then, Marquez has doggedly pursued a rematch with the Filipino star, but up to this point, Pacquiao had only showed luke warm interest in fighting him again.
