Mares Decisions Marchiano
Former 2004 Mexican Olympian Abner Mares (15-0, 9 KOs) stayed unbeated as he won a gruelling bout over Damian Marchiano (14-3-1, 5 KOs) on Saturday night. Mares landed an enourmous amount of shots on Marchiano, an Argentinian fighter, but he kept coming forward, firing off big homerun shots. Not a knockout puncher by any means, Marchinao, 27, was really bringing it, and his aggressive style clearly had Mares looking worried. However, Marchiano had diffulty connecting with Mares, who used movement and distance to keep Marchiano bottled up on the outside where he would do little damage. The final judges’ scores were 118-109, 118-109 and 117-109, all for Mares.
In the first six rounds of the fight, Mares unloaded a massive amount of punches on Marchiano, trying to halt his forward motion, but it had little effect on Marchiano. He kept contantly coming at Mares, looking like a another Rocky Marciano, and giving Mares problems any time he connected, which thankfully for Mares, was not that regular. In the 2nd half of the fight, Mares seemed to turn up his offensive arsenal a notch, as he began to throw even more punches, trying to take out Marchiano.
It had little effect, other than to tire Marchiano slightly, as he began to have problems breathing through his nose due to the huge amount of shots he had aborbed. In the final round, Mares let his hands go, hitting Marchiano with a huge flurry, hurting him and sending him to the ropes. However, Mares, not a big puncher, wasn’t able to come up with enough shots to chop Marchiano down and had to settle for a unanimous decision.
