Hatton Trainer Happy That People Expect Ricky To Lose To Mayweather

In the latest boxing news, Ricky Hatton’s trainer, Billy Graham, is reportedly more than pleased that most boxing writers are predicting that Hatton, 29, is going to lose his December 8th bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr, boxing’s pound-4-pound king. Apparently, Graham sees this as a good thing, rather than an indication that Hatton is in for rough times, as he thinks that it will let the pressure off of Hatton, enabling him to fight harder without any expectations on him whatsoever. Not sure if that’s the case, but if it makes Graham and Hatton feel better, that’s good for him.

However, in a larger sense, if most of the American boxing writers are picking Mayweather to beat Hatton, it’s more likely that they see Hatton as a limited fighter, one that will be out of his class against a dazzling boxer like Mayweather. It’s one thing beating an old, washed up Kostya Tszyu, and quite another fighting a prime Mayweather. Hatton’s case is made even more difficult because of the fact that the bout won’t be in England, where he is usually allowed to get a away with a lot of rough house tactics, such as wrestling, low blows, rabbit punches, elbows and other things of this nature.

In America, these fouls will receive a warning and if they’re repeated, Hatton will be penalized a point. If he continues with enough of them, it can very well lead to him being thrown out of the fight. Which is why the American writers are picking Mayweather to easily cruise to a 12-round unanimous decision, if not a knockout victory over the plodding Hatton.
