“Fans are Coming to see Mayweather, and not Hatton” - Ellerbe
In today’s edition of The Mirror, World Boxing Council wleterweight champion Flod Mayweather jr’s personal advisor Leonard Ellerbe is suggesting that most of the fans are coming to see Mayweather rather than the 29 year-old Ricky Hatton, who recently made a claim on the Mayweather-Hatton 24/7 HBO boxing special that 33,000 supporters compared to Mayweather’s 33. Ellerbe, however, disagrees with this, saying that Hatton is mainly popular in his native country of England.
Apparently Ellerbe’s not ready to give Hatton much credit for having a large fan base in the United States, pointing out that the reason why 10,000 fans showed up for Hatton’s June title defense against Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas was because of Castillo, who has a large fan base, Ellerbe said. Despite the fact that in his last bout just five months preior in Las vegas against Herman Ngoudjo, the fight didn’t draw flies for Castillo, hence it would seem to sink Ellerbe’s argument.
It seems that the most of the fans that are coming to see Mayweather now, are ones that are actively rooting against him, much in the same way that fans would come to see Muhammed Ali in the early part of his career. Though, Mayweather has none of Ali’s charisma, bravery, or boxing resume, drawing a certain type of fan that enjoys his style of fighting.
